WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Mitchell Olson went 3 for 4 with four runs batted in to lead the College of St. Scholastica baseball team to an 8-4 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Sunday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Park. With the win, the Saints improve to 3-2-1 overall, while the Engineers drop to 1-1.
St. Scholastica took advantage of two RPI errors in the bottom of the third to break open a scoreless game. A pair of hit batters with one out put two on for Joey Zwak, who drove in the game's first run with a single through the right side of the infield. An error loaded the bases in front of an Aaron Weber sacrifice fly, before Olson singled-home two for a 4-0 lead.
A duel between starting pitchers
Ryan Yerby of RPI and Jerry Gooley picked up as each put up scoreless frames until to the top of the seventh, when the Engineers plated four runs to tie the game.
Senior
Jimmy Jankowski singled through the left side with one out, before sophomore
George Rainer reached on infield single.
Jake Defayette then doubled down the line in right to get the Engineers on the board. A line out to second was followed by a two-run double to the gap in left center from
Cole Paquin, pulling RPI within 4-3. An outfielder error allowed the tying run to score from second.
The Saints got the run right back in the bottom half, when Zwak came home on a throwing error, making it 5-4.
After a scoreless top of the eighth, St. Scholastica added three insurance runs in the bottom half. Olson highlighted the outburst with a two-run double to deep left field.
Grant Taival (1-0) earned the win in relief, allowing one unearned run on one hit in 0.2 innings. Gooley took the tough-luck no decision, giving up three runs on six hits over 6.1 innings. He struck out three and walked three.
Yerby (0-1) allowed five runs (1 earned) on seven hits over 6.1 innings. He struck out six without a walk.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow morning, when they take on Dickinson College (9am) at Chain of Lakes Stadium. St. Scholastica battles Washington and Lee tomorrow (1pm).
