LEESBURG, Fla. – Senior
Cam Caswell went 3 for 5 in an 8-7, 11 inning victory over Swarthmore College, before the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team earned a come-from-behind, 4-3, win against Thiel College on Saturday afternoon. With the wins, the Engineers improve to 4-0 on the season.
Against the Garnet, the back-and-forth affair saw the two teams trade runs in the first and second innings, before each plated three in the fourth.
Trailing 4-1, RPI received an RBI-double from Caswell to kick-start the bottom half. Junior
Kyla Anderson then drove home two with a single to left center, scoring Caswell and senior
Maddie Provencher to tie the game at 4-4.
The game remained tied until the top of the eighth, when the International Tie Breaker rule was put into effect. Each side was able to plate the bonus baserunner until the top of the 11th, when RPI sophomore
Erika Holowka set the Garnet down in order, including a pair of strikeouts.
In the bottom of the 11th, Caswell drove in pinch runner
Catherine Worthington for the winning run.
Holowka (2-0) picked up the win in relief, while Meg Ozawa (0-1) took the loss.
In game two, Thiel scored three runs in the bottom of the first for an early lead.
The Engineers started their comeback effort into the top of the fourth, when Provencher singled up the middle to drive in classmate
Allie Hunt. Caswell then walked with the bases loaded to draw RPI within 3-2.
A sacrifice fly from sophomore
Erin Askins tied the game into the top of the fifth, before classmate
Ryleigh Greenwald delivered an RBI-groundout that brought home Hunt for a 4-3 lead.
Freshman
Alexis Cooke, who worked the final three innings, got herself out of a two-on, one-out jam by inducing a ground ball and a pop out to end the game with runners and second and third.
RPI is back in action on Sunday, when it take on Penn State Du Bois and Trinity University (TX) at 2:15pm and 4:30pm, respectively.
