Field Hockey Beats Union for Fifth Straight W

Story Links

TROY, N.Y. - Brianna Duba had a hand in both goals to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Union College in a Liberty League contest at Harkness Field. The win improves the Engineers records to 7-6 overall - with five straight victories - and 3-1 in the conference. The Dutchwomen drop to 5-7 and 1-3.

The Engineers led 1-0 after the first quarter thanks to a successful penalty corner conversion. Kaitlyn Stulen inserted the ball to Duba, who tallied off a scramble for her fourth goal of the season.

Duba earned the assist on Rensselaer's second goal, which came 6:49 into the second period. She sent the ball toward goal and to Delana Bonci, who finished the play. The goal was her fourth of the year.

Union goalkeeper Heather Poisson kept it a two-goal deficit with several key saves, including two lunging efforts that denied penalty corner markers before halftime.

Both teams had chances in the third quarter with the Dutchwomen earning a pair of corners and the Engineers getting three. Union's Poisson made four stops in the frame, while Isabel Lubin had a defensive save.

The Dutchwomen pulled to within one goal when Emma Davis slapped a loose ball past RPI keeper Jen Richardson with 1:36 to play in the fourth quarter. The Dutchwomen then brought Poisson to the sideline for an extra field player, but could not generate what would have been a game-tying opportunity.

The Engineers, who out-shot Union 19-4 and had a 7-6 advantage in corners, are on the road on Sunday when they play at first place Ithaca College in a conference matchup. Union hosts league foe Vassar College on Sunday. Both games begin at 1pm.
