SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Junior
Josh Gaudiano scored late in the second half to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-1-1 overall (3-0-0 Liberty League), while the Thoroughbreds drop to 6-4-0 (1-2-0 Liberty League).
Gaudiano netted his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 85th minute, getting to a loose ball in front of goal and poking it home. Junior
Gabe Terando picked up the assist on the play.
RPI's tally came less than 10 minute after senior goalkeeper
Luke Brezak saved a penalty kick by Skidmore's Finn Weber, which kept the game scoreless at the time.
The Engineers also had a penalty stopped earlier in the half, as Gaudiano was denied for the first time in his collegiate career. Thoroughbreds keeper Bobby Stratts was able to keep out Gaudiano's right-footed try in the 64t minute.
RPI finished with a 17-13 shot advantage, including 8-5 on goal. Corner kicks also favored the visitors, 7-5.
Brezak (7-1-1) had five saves for his fifth straight shutout, extending his and the team's streak to 450:25. Stratts (4-4-0) had seven stops at the other end of the field.
The Engineers are back in action on Tuesday night, when they host Western New England College at East Campus Stadium (7:30pm). Skidmore travels to Vassar College on Saturday (2pm).
