Women's Hockey Downs Boston University, 4-2

Engineers never trail in picking up third straight win; Blitz pots late winner

TROY, N.Y. – Junior Julia Blitz scored the eventual-game winning goal late in the third period to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Boston University, on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-4-0, while the Terriers drop to 3-1-2.

With the game tied at 2-2, RPI picked up its third power play of the game and took advantage. Sophomore Riena Jahnke (Allen, TX / Dallas Stars) dug the puck out of a scrum along the right wing boards and sent it across to Blitz (Potomac, MD / Washington Pride), who stepped into a wrist shot and beat BU freshman goaltender Callie Shanahan (Commerce, MI / Honeybaked) low blocker-side. The power play goal, which came at 18:46, was the second of the year for Blitz.

The Terriers lifted Shanahan for an extra attacker with just under a minute to play, getting a good look at goal from the left circle for sophomore Julia Shaunessy (Marshfield, MA / Tabor Academy), but RPI junior netminder Amanda Rampado (Stoney Creek, ON / Stoney Creek Sabres) made a pad save to preserve the lead.

Senior Mikayla Capelle (Dawson Creek, BC / Okanagan Hockey Academy) added an empty-netter with 0.6 seconds on the clock to cap the scoring. Junior Hannah Price (Pittsburgh, PA / Pittsburgh Pens Elite) collected the lone assist on Capelle's second of the year.

RPI opened the scoring at 14:46 of the first, when junior Sarah Bukvic (Burlington, ON / Stoney Creek Sabres) cleaned up a rebound in front of goal for her second of the year. Helpers on the game's first goal went to sophomore Magdalena Erbenova (Mlada Boleslav, Czech Republic) and senior Delaney Weiss (Lake Forest, IL / Chicago Young Americans).

Senior Courtney Correia (Whitby, ON / Toronto Jr. Aeros) answered on the rush at 16:21 to knot the score at 1-1. Breaking up the right side, she made a move into the right circle, before snapping home her team-leading fifth goal of the year. Classmate Mackenna Parker (Clavet, SA / Saskatoon Stars) and sophomore Madison Cardaci (Westminster, MA / Williston Northhampton) were credited with the assists.

The Engineers retook the lead (2-1) on the first collegiate goal from sophomore Ellie Kaiser (Westmont, IL / Chicago Mission) at 2:20 of the second. She jammed home a loose puck at the left side of the crease after RPI forced a turnover in the offensive zone. Classmate Maddie Papineau (Sudbury, ON / Oakville Hornets) earned her first RPI point with the primary assist on the tally, while senior Lilli Friis-Hansen (Lyngby, Denmark / Gentofte) had the secondary.

Boston University answered again, as junior Julia Nearis (Beverly, MA / Kent School) took advantage of a bad RPI change, receiving an outlet pass from Shaunessy and drilling a slap shot past Rampado from the right circle. The tying goal was Nearis' fourth of the campaign.

Rampado (3-4-0) finished with 24 saves, including 14 in the first period alone. Shanahan had 20 stops at the other end of the ice. RPI went 1 for 3 on the power play, while the Terriers were 0 for 5.

Rensselaer has now won three games in a row for the first time since December 2, 2017. The victory over Boston University is its first since October 4, 2008 – a 2-0 decision in Troy.

The Engineers are back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they host No. 9 Providence (3pm). BU travels to Schenectady to take on Union tomorrow (3pm).
