TROY, N.Y. – Junior
Amanda Rampado stopped all 42 shots she faced to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 2-0 victory over ninth-ranked Providence College, on Saturday afternoon at the Houston Field House. With the win – their four straight – the Engineers improve to 4-4-0 overall, while the Friars drop to 3-1-2.
Rampado (Stoney Creek, ON / Stoney Creek Sabres) made 14 saves in each period to stymie the Friars, including six stops on the visitors' three power play chances. Providence finished with 76 attempts at goal, with 20 of them being blocked by Engineers in front of Rampado, who earned her second shutout of the year.
RPI tallied its first of four power play opportunities on the day, as sophomore
Ellie Kaiser (Westmont, IL / Chicago Mission) stuffed home a rebound at 13:18 of the opening frame. Freshman
Audrey McCutcheon (St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, PQ / Stanstead College) took a shot from the left circle that was saved by Providence graduate student netminder Sandra Abstreiter (Freisling, Germany), but the puck fell to Kaiser on the doorstep for the tap in and her second goal in as many games.
After a scoreless second period, the Engineers doubled their lead at 15:17 of the third, when junior
Marah Wagner (Langley, BC / Robert Morris) fired a shot off the mask of Abstreiter and in for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Helpers on the insurance tally went to sophomores Reina Jahnke (Allen, TX / Dallas Stars) – her fourth straight game with a point – and
Magdalena Erbenova (Mlada Boleslav, Czech Republic / Northwood School).
The Friars pulled Abstreiter with just over 30 seconds to play, but could not beat Rampado (4-4-0), who made three saves during the late 6-on-5 push.
RPI finished 1 for 4 on the power play, with the Friars going 0 for 3. Abstreiter (2-1-2) had 23 stops in the game, with 18 coming in the final two frames.
The victory was Rensselaer's first ever at home over the Friars and their four-game winning streak is the program's first since the 2012-13 season. RPI hasn't won five or more consecutive games since the 2008-09 campaign.
The Engineers are back in action next weekend, when they host St. Lawrence and Clarkson on Friday (6pm) and Saturday (3pm), respectively. Providence hosts Boston University on Sunday (3pm).
