TROY, .N.Y. – Junior goaltender Lucy Morgan made 32 saves to lead the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Saints improve to 4-2-2 overall (1-0-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 4-5-0 (2-1-0 ECAC Hockey).
Morgan (Mandan, ND / Maple Grove High School) made 12 stops in the first, six in the second and 14 in third to preserve St. Lawrence's first conference victory over the season. RPI junior
Amanda Rampado (Stoney Creek, ON / Stoney Creek Sabres) had 22 stops at the other end of the ice, with 12 coming the opening frame.
The Saints jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, when senior Brittney Gout (Caledon, ON / RIT) snapped home her own rebound at the right side of the net for her second goal of the season. Winning an offensive zone face-off back to the point, Gout cut to the net and found the puck on the doorstep for a shot that was stopped by Rampado. She gathered the carom quickly and lifted it into the net for the tally.
Sophomore Aly McLeod (Stratford, ON / Cambridge Rivulettes) made it a 2-0 game at 11:13 of the first, on an individual effort that started behind the RPI net. McLeod looped around the cage and into the right circle, before firing a shot over the glove of Rampado for her fourth goal of the year.
A tightly check second period saw the Engineers hold a narrow 6-3 shot edge, with neither team finding the scoresheet until late in the frame.
Just seconds into RPI's first and only power play of the game, freshman Abby Hustler (St. Louis, PEI / Ontario Hockey Academy) stole the puck at her own blue line and raced in for a shorthanded goal with just 7.9 seconds remaining the middle frame. The unassisted tally was her second of the campaign.
The Engineers continued to ramp up their pressure in the offensive, but could not beat Morgan. RPI even lifted Rampado for an extra attacker with 2:31 left in regulation, leading to a 14-8 shooting advantage in the first period, but Morgan stood tall between the pipes for St. Lawrence.
Both teams finished 0 for 1 on the power play, with the Engineers picking up shots to none for the Saints.
RPI is back in action tomorrow afternoon, when it hosts Clarkson University (3pm). St. Lawrence travels to Schenectady to take on Union College (3pm).
