POTSDAM, N.Y. - Seniors
Tommaso Valagussa and
Paul Silva each tallied to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Clarkson University, on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 11-4-2 overall (7-2-0 Liberty League), while the Golden Knights conclude their season at 4-9-3 (2-6-1 Liberty League).
Valagussa got the visitors on the board in the 37th minute, converting a penalty kick for his third goal of the season. The marker came during a half in which RPI held a 7-2 shot advantage, with neither of the Clarkson attempts finding the target.
Ethan Boyle and Silva were both shown yellow cards in the 61st minute, before Greg Schebece saw his chance miss the net on a Golden Knights corner kick in the 64th minute.
RPI nearly doubled its lead in the 77th minute, as back-to-back shots from freshman
Julio Rodriguez were saved by Clarkson goalkeeper Bryan Benitez.
The Engineers did finally break through for a second goal in the 87th minute, when Silva buried a pass from sophomore
Reggie Durden for his second of the year.
Senior goalkeeper
Luke Brezak was not forced to make a save over the 90 minutes of action, while Benitez finished with four stops at the other end of the field.
RPI will be the top seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament and will await the winner of the St. Lawrence/Vassar First Round match on Tuesday.
