SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team scored in the 86th minute, but Union College senior midfielder Erin O'Shea tied the game just minutes later and the Engineers and Dutchwomen played to a 2-2 tie in a Liberty League contest at College Park Field.
The Engineers broke out on top when senior
Erin Barnes finished a set piece with a right-footed shot that eluded the goalkeeper and found the back of the net. Classmate
Whitney Wisnom ran down a long ball on the left side of the field, turned toward the sideline and then centered a pass to
Gwen Barnes, who headed it to her sister.
Erin Barnes was alone in front and snuck a shot past a lunging Abby Mitty in the 23rd minute.
The Dutchwomen tied the score when O'Shea tallied into the upper right part of the net in the 68th minute.
The game remained deadlocked until the 86th minute when sophomore
Bryanna Swinson beat two defenders to a
Julia Pelletier cross and headed the ball into the net from just outside the right post. Pelletier and
Olivia Spector coordinated a give-and-go on the right side in the offensive zone to set up the goal, Swinson's second of the season.
O'Shea tied it up again, however, finishing a pass from Emma Schleimer with only 2:01 remaining in regulation.
Brooke Miller had a shot that Mitty stopped in the first 10 minutes of overtime and Wisnom was thwarted late in the extra session.
Mitty finished with five saves, while
Maya Kessler made six stops for the Engineers, who had 15 shots and three corner kicks, as compared to Union's 18 and 12.
RPI, which is now 4-2-4 overall and 1-1-2 in the conference, return to the road next weekend when they play at league foes RIT (Friday) and William Smith (Saturday). The Dutchwomen, who are 5-5-2 and 2-1-1, play at William Smith (Friday) and Ithaca (Saturday) next weekend.
