TROY, N.Y. - Rensselaer Polytechnic Instittue (RPI) student-athletes
Ola Nawrocki and
Shannon Brown combined to win four individual events and a relay in a dual meet victory on Saturday and both were recognized by the Liberty League for their efforts. Nawrocki, a junior, earned Women's Swimmer of the Week, while Brown, a freshman, captured Women's Rookie of the Week.
In a 151-149 victory over Ithaca College at Robison Pool, Nawrocki (Chesire, CT / Chesire) had two individual victories, a relay win and an individual runner-up. She won the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.13, a margin of just under a second (1:10.08) over teammate
Colleen Whittaker (Winthrop, MA / Winthrop). She came in first in the 200 individual medley in 2:16.38, which was nearly three seconds in front of the runner-up's time of 2:19.18. Nawrocki was second to Whittaker in the 200 breaststroke (2:31.07-2:34.09) and swam second on the victorious 200 medley relay team that finished in 1:52.01. In that meet-opening event, they were :01.36 ahead of the runner-up.
During her first season (the 2020-21 campaign was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic), Nawrocki was first on the team's in both the 500 freestyle and the 400 IM. The Dean's Honor List environmental engineering major was second in four other events and she swam on relays, helping the 200 medley squad to first at the Liberty League Championship.
Brown (Pasadena, MD / Archbishop Spalding) made her home collegiate debut a memorable one with three victories (1 relay) and a second place finish. She won the 200 freestyle in 1:57.98, a margin of nearly four seconds (2:01.90), and the 100 freestyle in 54.69, which was nearly two seconds in front of the next fastest competitor (56.49). She missed winning the 50 free by less than a second (25.17 to 25.45) and swam the anchor on the victorious 200 medley relay.
Prior to attending Rensselaer, Brown swam throughout high school and was a representative on the Maryland Swimming Team in 2018. She is a mechanical engineering major.
The Engineers return to competition on Sunday when they host both the College of St. Rose and Oneonta in dual meets beginning at 1pm.
