TROY, N.Y. – Eleven different players recorded a point for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team in defeating Post University, 4-1, on Tuesday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5-10-0 overall, while the Eagles drop to 2-9-0.
Graduate student
Lauren Severson (Rockford, IL / Madison Capitals) opened the scoring at 7:14 of the first period, when she whipped home a shot from just outside the crease. The tally, which was her second goal of the season, drew assists from junior
Marah Wagner (Langley, BC / Robert Morris) and freshman
Michelle Nutescu (Northfield, IL / Shattuck-St. Mary's) – the first point of her collegiate career.
The Engineers doubled their lead at 12:20 of the second on an individual effort from freshman
Mika Jahnke (Allen, TX / Dallas Stars). Carrying the puck into the offensive zone, she flipped the puck through her legs and sent it across the face of goal, where it deflected off the skate of a defender and in. Classmate
Meg Hildner (Austin, TX / Dallas Stars) picked up the lone helper on the play.
Sophomore blueliner
Taylor Larsen (Bolton, ON / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) gave the hosts a 3-0 advantage at 9:35 of the third, firing a shot from the left point that caromed off the stick a Post player and past Eagles sophomore netminder Grace Glasrud (Delano, MN / Delano Tigers).
Rensselaer netted its fourth goal at 15:18 of the frame, when junior
Hannah Price (Pittsburgh, PA / Pittsburgh Pens Elite) jumped on a loose puck in the low slot and lifted it into the top left corner of the goal for her first of the campaign. Senior
Mikayla Capelle (Dawson Creek, BC / Okanagan Hockey Academy) and junior
Sarah Bukvic (Burlington, ON / Stoney Creek Sabres) earned the assists on the play.
Post got on the board at 18:45 on a shot from just inside the blue line by junior Jenna Abeyta (Aurora, CO / Team Colorado U19). Classmate Saide Storm (New Hudson, MI / Meijer AAA) collected the lone assist on Abeyta's third goal of the season.
Venne (1-0-0) finished with 13 saves to earn the win between the pipes, while Glasrud stopped a career-high 48. The Engineers went 0 for 2 on the power play, while Post ended up 0 for 4.
RPI is now idle until November 26 and 27, when it hosts St. Cloud State for a weekend series at the Houston Field House. The Eagles are back in action next weekend, when they host Frank Pierce University for a pair.
