TROY, N.Y. – Six different players recorded multiple points, including the first two collegiate goals from sophomore
John Beaton, which paced the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team to a 7-2 victory over Long Island University, on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 6-5-1 overall, while the Sharks drop to 2-7-2.
Beaton (Stittsville, ON / Youngstown Phantoms) got the scoring started at 11:11 of the opening frame, firing a shot from the top of the left circle that beat LIU graduate student netminder Kris Carlson (Centerville, VA / Alaska-Anchorage) low, glove side. Helpers on Beaton's first tally went to seniors
Jake Johnson (Bloomington, MN / Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) and
Jakub Lacka (Bratislava, Slovakia / Central Illinois Flying Aces).
RPI doubled its lead at 12:53, taking advantage of a Sharks giveaway in their defensive zone. Graduate student
Justin Addamo (Aurieres, France / Robert Morris) stole the puck at the right circle and wired a shot into the top left corner of the net for his second goal of the season.
The visitors drew to within 2-1 on freshman Isaiah Fox's (Pierrefonds, PQ / Maine Nordiques) first collegiate goal. Driving the net from the left side, he snuck the puck past RPI graduate student goaltender
Linden Marshall (Victoria, BC / Trail Smoke Eaters).
Rensselaer opened the game up in the second period, scoring four times, including three on the power play to take a 6-1 lead.
Senior blueliner
Kyle Hallbauer (Howell, NJ / Lone Star Brahmas) got the barrage going with a man-advantage tally from the top of the zone – his first of the year. The goal, which came at 9:06, drew assists from graduate student
Anthony Baxter (Oakville, ON / UMass Lowell) and senior
Ottoville Leppanen (Espoo, Finland / Espoo Blues U20).
A power-play goal from sophomore
Lauri Sertti (Espoo, Finland / Amarillo Bulls) made 4-1 just 1:04 later. Johnson and junior
Zach Dubinsky (Highland Park, IL / Omaha Lancers) provided the setup on Sertti's second tally of the season.
Dubinsky then potted an even-strength tally at 17:13, snapping home a feed from classmate
TJ Walsh (Shrewsbury, MA / Northeastern University) from the left circle. Junior
Mason Klee (Morrison, CO / Sioux Falls Stampede) earned the secondary assist on Dubinky's fifth goal in the last seven games.
Beaton then capped the four-goal outburst with his second of the contest – on the power play – at 19:30 of the frame. Scoring from almost same location as Sertti's tally 10 minutes earlier, Beaton one-timed a cross-ice pass from senior captain
Ture Linden (Great Falls, VA / Lone Star Brahmas) past Carlson for a 6-1 advantage.
LIU freshman defenseman Spencer Cox (Powell, OH / Chippewa Steel) netted the opening goal of the third period on a one-timer from the top of the right circle at 5:00. Graduate student Tyler Welsh (Whistler, BC / Yale) picked off a pass in the RPI zone and found a trailing Cox for the tally – his fourth of the season.
Leppanen then scored on a tap-in at the left side of the net, taking a pass from Linden at 15:39 and burying his third goal of the season. The play started with a shot from the left point by Baxter that deflected to Linden at the right side of the net. Linden sent the puck across the goal mouth to Leppanen for the finish.
Marshall (6-4-1) wound up with 12 saves, while Carlson (1-5-2) had 19, before giving way to senior Vincent Purpura (Lemont, IL / Boston University) start the third period. Purpura had six stops in his 20 minutes of work. RPI finished 3 for 5 on the power play, while the Sharks went 0 for 4.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow evening for the back half of the home-and-home series, which will be played at Northwell Health Ice Center in East Meadow, N.Y. (8pm).
