Men's Hockey Battles to 2-2 Tie at LIU

Engineers come back twice to register road draw

EAST MEADOW, N.Y.  – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team came back twice to earn a 2-2 tie at Long Island University, on Saturday night at Northwell Health Ice Center. With the draw, the Engineers move to 6-5-2 overall, while the Sharks are now 2-7-3.

The hosts opened the scoring at 5:41 of the first period, when Jordan Timmons whipped home a shot from a tight angle, after the puck was played behind the RPI net by Jordan Di Cicco.

RPI pulled even on Jakob Lee's second goal of the season at 14:37 of the first. Senior Ottoville Leppanen forced the offensive zone turnover in the right circle, deflecting the puck to the front of the LIU net, where Lee was wait to pounce. He steered a shot around a sprawling Kris Carlson and into the net.

Despite numerous opportunities in the second period, included a 5-on-3 power play chance, the Engineers were kept off the board in the middle frame.

LIU took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play of its own, just 1:19 into the third on a tally from Tyler Welsh. Di Cicco earned the primary assist after his shot from the point was saved. Welsh was there to tap home the rebound and give LIU a 2-1 lead.

Justin Addamo netted the game's tying goal at 14:40 of the final stanza, redirecting a shot past Carlson for his third goal of the year. Helpers on the play went to senior captain Ture Linden – who extended his point streak to 11 games – and sophomore Lauri Sertti.

Rensselaer killed off an entire minor penalty to begin the overtime session and still wound up outshooting the Sharks, 5-2. The Engineers had a flurry of chances right before the final horn sounded, but could not beat Carlson for a third time.

Marshall (6-4-2) turned away 18, while Carlson (1-5-3) had 29 stops at the other end of the ice. RPI finished 0 for 5 on the power play and the Sharks went 1 for 5.

The Engineers are back in action on Friday, when they host Northeastern at the Houston Field House (7pm). LIU visits St. Anslem on Tuesday night (7pm).
