TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Devon Levi stopped 25 of 26 shots to lead the 18th-ranked Northeastern University men's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Huskies improve to 10-4-1 overall, while the Engineers drop to 6-6-2.
Northeastern broke onto the scoreboard first at 10:57 of the opening frame. Working the puck around the offensive zone, senior captain Jordan Harris (Haverhill, MA / Kimball Union) found junior Aidan McDonough (Milton, MA / Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) open in the right circle for a one-time finish into an empty cage for his team-leading 12th goal of the season.
RPI pulled even at 4:44 of the second, when senior defenseman
Jake Johnson (Bloomington, MN / Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) jumped on a Huskies outlet pass and started a rush the other way. Moving into the middle of the slot, Johnson fired a shot off the left pad of Levi (Dollard-des-Ormeaux, PQ / Carlton Place) and into the path of classmate
Ture Linden, who snapped home his sixth goal of the year to tie the contest at 1-1. With the tally, Linden extended his career-long point streak to 12 games.
Both teams had chances in the second period, including a Northeastern power play at the middle stages of the frame, which generated three shots.
The third opened with opportunities at both ends off the ice, but Northeastern broke the deadlock following a big save by Levi. Senior Jakov Novak (Windsor, ON / Bentley College) lifted a backhand shot, from almost no angle, into the top right corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season. The tally drew helpers from freshman Matt Choupani (Montreal, PQ / Des Moines Buccaneers) and junior Jeremie Bucheler (St. Laurent, PQ / Victoria Grizzlies).
Rensselaer pushed back with chances to tie the game, including a breakaway from junior defenseman
Simon Kjellberg (Nashville, TN / Dubuque Fighting Saints), that was stoned by Levi.
The Engineers, who had two power play chances in the third, which netted them two shots on goal, lifted graduate student goaltender
Linden Marshall (Victoria, BC / Trail Smoke Eaters) with two minutes to play. RPI generated plenty of offensive zone time, but could not fit a second puck past Levi.
Levi (10-4-1) made 10 stops in each of the final two periods to pick up the victory, while Marshall (6-5-2) had 19 in total. The Huskies were just 0 for 1 on the power play, while the Engineers wound up 0 for 2.
Both teams are back in action on Sunday afternoon for a 3pm puck drop at Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass.
