TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Chris Pappas scored the first two goals of his collegiate career, including the game-winner with 1:37 left in regulation, to lift the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Saints improve to 2-2-2 overall (1-0-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 4-3-1 (2-1-0 ECAC Hockey).
Pappas (Toronto, ON / Brooks Bandits) broke a 3-3 deadlock at 18:23 of the third, inching a loose puck in the crease over the goal line after RPI graduate student goaltender
Linden Marshall (Victoria, BC / Trail Smoke Eaters) had made an initial save. Senior David Jankowski (Waterdown, ON / Hawkesbury Hawks) earned the lone helper on the game-deciding tally.
RPI lifted Marshall for an extra attacker with under a minute to play and got a handful of good looks at the net, but could not beat St. Lawrence senior netminder Emil Zetterquist (Stockholm, Sweden / Coulee Regional Chill) for a fourth time.
Graduate student
Shane Sellar (Carlisle, PA / Dartmouth College) netted the game's first goal at 7:15 of the first period, taking a stretch pass from senior
Jake Johnson (Bloomington, MN / Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) and skating in on a partial breakaway. Sellar's initial shot was saved by Zetterquist, but he snatched up the rebound and stuck home the wrap around tally for the first of his two goals on the night.
Sellar gave the hosts a 2-0 lead at 14:54, when he took a feed from sophomore
John Beaton (Stittsville, ON / Youngstown Phantoms) and beat Zetterquist high, glove side for his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Johnson also had an assist the play.
The Saints took advantage of an RPI giveaway to pull to within 2-1 at 18:57 of the opening stanza. Jankowski worked the puck off the right wing boards for sophomore Justin Paul (Thunder Bay, ON / Wellington Dukes), who snapped home his first goal of the season from the middle of the slot.
Pappas evened the game at 11:10 of the second, redirecting a puck that was thrown towards the net by Jankowski for his first goal of the evening. Paul collected the secondary assist on the tying tally.
Senior
Jakub Lacka (Bratislava, Slovakia / Central Illinois Flying Aces) gave the Engineers the lead back with 3.1 seconds remaining the second period. Junior
Simon Kjellberg (Nashville, TN / Dubuque Fighting Saints) earned the primary assist by firing a puck at the net from the blue line. Lacka tipped it past Zetterquist for his third goal of the year. Senior captain
Ture Linden (Great Falls, VA / Lone Star Brahmas) also had an assist on the goal.
St. Lawrence pulled even once again at 6:29 of the third, when they converted a on odd-man rush. Skating up the left wing boards, sophomore Max Dorrington (North Reading, MA / Cushing Academy) sent a cross-crease pass to classmate Nicholas Trela (Trenton, MI / Amarillo Bulls) for the tap-in.
The Engineers finished with a narrow, 30-29 shot advantage and went 1 for 3 on the power play, while the Saints wound up 0 for 4.
Zetterquist (2-1-2) had 27 saves, including a combined 21 in the final two periods. Marshall (4-2-1) turned away 25 at the other end, with 12 coming in the opening frame. The Saints, who snapped a five-game losing streak to the Engineers, saw Jankowski collect a game-high three points on three assists.
RPI is back in action tomorrow night, when it hosts Clarkson University (7pm). St. Lawrence travels to Schenectady to take on Union College tomorrow (7pm).
