Alaska Edges Men's Hockey, 3-2

Nanooks gets late third period goal, before holding on for non-league win

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Freshman Connor Mylyock scored his first collegiate goal in the third period to lift the University of Alaska-Fairbanks men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Tuesday night at Carlson Center. With the win, the Nanooks improve to 3-12-0, while the Engineers drop to 8-10-2.

Mylyock carried the puck from behind the goal and lifted home his first NCAA goal at 14:37 of the third period, to give the hosts a lead that they did not relinquish. Colin Doyle and Caleb Hite collected the assists on the game-winning tally.

Junior Zach Dubinsky opened the scoring for RPI at 8:47 of the first period, receiving a cross-ice pass from classmate Ryan Mahshie and jamming home his seventh goal of the season.

Alaska knotted the score at 1-1 with under four minutes to play in the first, when Chase Dubois redirected a point shot by Arvils Bergmanis past RPI graduate student goaltender Linden Marshall. Jordan Muzzillo picked up the secondary assist on the tally, which came at 16:21.

Just over a minute later, Brady Risk jumped on a loose puck between the circles and ripped home his third of the year. Filip Fornaa Svennson hit Risk with an attempt from the left point, before Risk turned and whipped the puck into the net.

The Engineers scored the only goal of the second period just after a Nanooks penalty had expired. Graduate student Justin Addamo corralled an outlet pass from Mahshie and drove the net, before lifting a backhanded shot past Alaska goalie Gustavs Davis Grigals. The goal, which also drew an assist from junior Jake Johnson, was Addamo's fifth of the campaign.

Sophomore John Beaton had a shorthanded break early in the third to try and untie the game for Rensselaer, but Grigals denied his shot from close range.

Marshall (8-9-2) finished with 30 saves, while Grigals had 15 at the other end of the ice. RPI was 0 for 3 on the power play, with Alaska going 0 for 4.

The Engineers and Nanooks conclude their extended four-game series tomorrow night at 11:07pm ET.
