CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's and men's swimming & diving teams wrapped up the first day of the three-day MIT Winter Invite with the men in second place and the women in third. Action continues on Saturday and Sunday.
Six events were held with the 800 free relay, 1650 free and 1-meter (women) and 3-meter (men) diving. RPI's men compiled 162 points and trail only Tufts (229) in the five school invitational, while the women are third of seven with 131 points. Tufts (240 points) and MIT (226) are ahead of them.
Matthew Youngbar highlighted Rensselaer's evening with a fifth place finish in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 16:45.24. He was one of five Engineers to finish in the top 11 of the event with Ethan Gadbois coming in sixth with a time of 16:49.89. Matt Nowak was ninth (17:21.63), Connor Lenahan was 10th (17:26.40) and Andrew Palmer was 11th (17:29.20). There were 17 competitors in the event.
Gabriela Crother-Collado was RPI's top finisher in the women's 1650, which had 27 swimmers. She was seventh with a time of 18:10.42 with teammates
Megan Lewis (18:41.67) and
Bridget Dwyer (18:41.68) finishing 11th and 12th, respectively.
Rensselaer's teams had four squads each in the 800 free relay with the quartets of
Megan Beaulieu,
Ola Nawrocki,
Alyssa Cahill and
Hope Atkins (7:57.16) leading the women and Jimmy Zhen, Lorenzo Gurri, Anthony Acciani and Daniel Savidge (7:09.99) pacing the men.
Matt Abraham was RPI's top diver with a sixth place finish (218.45) and
Shannon O'Hara led the women with an 11th place finish (196.60).
