Swimming & Diving Concludes at MIT Invite

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's and men's swimming & diving teams concluded their fall semester schedules on the final day of the three-day MIT Invite with the women placing fifth of seven schools and the men third of five. The Engineers are now idle from competition until January 14 when they host Union College in a dual meet at Robison Pool.

In Sunday's final, the women's 200 medley relay team of Megan Beaulieu, Ola Nawrocki, Colleen Whittaker and Shannon Brown earned a seventh place finish in the A final with a time of 1:48.45. The men's squad of Tony Min, Aleksey Makarov, Lorenzo Gurri and Mike Dowd followed with an eighth place finish in their race, touching in 1:34.48.

Freshman Gabriela Crother-Collado swam in the 500 free A final and raced to a time of 5:15.37 to finish in 10th place. RPI then had two men in the top 10 with Matthew Youngbard (4:50.64) coming in ninth and Ethan Gadbois (4:54.84) trailing by just 4.24 for the 10th spot.

Alyssa Cahill had one of the top finishes of the session for Rensselaer with a sixth place time of 2:07.55 in the 200 back and she was joined in the event by Megan Beaulieu, who was 10th with a time of 2:09.32. 

In the 100 butterfly, Lorenzo Gurri was eighth (50.50) before Whittaker (2:27.31) and Nawrocki (2:29.67) went sixth and seventh in the 200 breaststroke. Brown followed with a seventh place finish in the 200 IM, registering a time of 2:10.73.

Brown, Nawrocki, Whittaker and Crother-Collado took part in the final event, the 400 free relay, and touched in 3:36.24 for an eighth place finish. The men's team of Dowd, Gadbois, Nicholas Stefanidis and Anthony Acciani were 10th (3:12.95) with teammates Gurri, Fernando Gomez Fischer, Jimmy Zhen and Jake Fassora one place back (3:13.76).

Rensselaer's men's team compiled 710 points, which trailed the host Engineers' 1842.5 points and Tuft's 1771.5. Wheaton was fourth with 399 points and Keene State was fifth with 210.

Tufts won the women's meet with 1753 points, followed by MIT (1634), Wheaton (730), RPI (583), Wellesley (429), Keene State (178) and Simmons (58).
