Women's Tennis Drops Close Match to Saints

CANTON, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team held a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play, but St. Lawrence University battled back from the deficit to defeat the Engineers 5-4 in a Liberty League contest. RPI is now 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the conference, while the Saints are now 5-2 and 5-1.

After St. Lawrence won the first doubles match, Rensselaer's Rani Jones and Chloe Barr won at No. 1 and the second-seeded team of Krisia Flores Gonzalez and Natalie Cipriano also prevailed. Both matches went to tiebreaks.

The Saints tied the match at 2-2 with a win in the first completed singles match but Jones put the visitors back in front with a 4-1, 4-1 win at No. 1. The singles matches were played using abbreviated scoring. St. Lawrence rattled off three straight wins with Meredith Macey clinching the contest with a 4-1, 4-2 win at No. 5.

RPI's Tess Lubin closed the match with a win at No. 6, 5-4 (7), 4-1.

The Engineers are scheduled to be back on the road on Thursday at 4pm at William Smith College. St. Lawrence travels to Geneva to play the Herons on Saturday.
