TROY, N.Y. - Two University of Rochester pitchers limited the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to one run in two games and the No. 25 Yellowjackets swept a Liberty League doubleheader from the Engineers, 4-0 and 5-1, at Doris Robison Field. Rochester improves to 26-7 overall and 19-2 in the conference, while RPI drops to 4-3 and 3-2.
Senior Hannah Leary allowed just two hits, both in the seventh inning, with five strikeouts and two walks in a complete game victory in the first game. Game 2 saw sophomore Emily Sharlach give up just four hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Three different Yellowjackets hit home runs in the two games, while junior
Erin Askins had a solo shot for the Engineers.
Rochester jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the first contest on a solo homer by senior Jen Carson and an RPI single to center field by classmate Marissa Russo. Two more runs in the fifth off two-out RBI singles from Toni Anne Hahn and Hannah Keiper padded the lead to four and Leary made it stand. She had a no-hitter through six innings before
Allie Hunt dropped a ball into shallow right field near the foul line. Freshman catcher
Alex Ledger added a single two batters later, but RPI could not mount a threat.
Russo (2 for 4, 1 RBI), the leadoff hitter, and second place hitter Sammi Re (2 for 4, 1 run) combined for four hits, a run and an RBI, while Carson had two hits in three at bats, a run and an RBI. The Yellowjackets finished with nine hits, including seven off RPI starter
Alexis Cooke. A sophomore, Cooke had four strikeouts and one walk.
The second game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Rochester's Allison Beckwith hit a home run to left center field with Hahn on base. Keiper added a three-run shot an inning later and the visitors led 5-0 after five. Askins countered with a lead-off home run to the opposite field to cut the deficit to four runs, but Sharlach retired the next six batters to close out the game.
Keiper, the first baseman, had two hits, a run and three RBI in the game, while Beckwith finished with two hits, a run and two runs batted in.
Brooke Sroczinski threw a complete game, allowing just six hits and one walk while striking out seven for Rensselaer, which saw four players get one hit apiece.
The same two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Sunday in Rochester with the first pitch slated for 1pm.
