SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Union College softball salvaged the final game of the season series with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), winning a restarted contest, 12-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Alexander Field. With the victory, the Dutchwomen improve to 6-16 overall (6-14 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 4-4 (3-3 Liberty League).
In a game that was halted last Wednesday due to inclement weather, the Dutchwomen survived an RPI rally in the middle innings to take the delayed series finale.
Trailing 8-1 at the stoppage, the Engineers scored three runs in the top of the fourth to draw within 8-4. Sophomore
Chloe Lewandowski plated a run with a groundout, before junior
Erin Askins drove in
Liv Vizzini with a single to right center. A wild pitch then allowed graduate student
Veronica DeStefano to scamper home from third.
RPI could not cut into the deficit in the fifth and the Dutchwomen took advantage, scoring four times in the bottom of the inning to end the game. Karson Saunders delivered the decisive blow, scoring the game's final two runs with a single up the middle, scoring Anna Zdunczyk and Stuart Buxton.
Makayla Koehler (4-7), who started the game almost a week ago, picked up the win in the circle, going 5.0 innings and allowing four runs on six hits. RPI sophomore
Alexis Cooke (3-2) took the loss, surrendering 10 runs on eight hits over 3.1 innings.
The Engineers are back in action on Thursday, when they head to the North Country for a doubleheader against St. Lawrence (2pm).
