Softball Concludes Regular Season with Sweep

Engineers take two more from Tigers, 15-5 and 11-6

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) closed out their regular season schedule with a doubleheader sweep at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), extending their winning streak to six games. With wins of 15-5 and 11-6, the Engineers improve to 10-4 overall (9-3 Liberty League), while the Tigers finish their season at 6-27 (2-23).

In Game 1, the Engineers jumped out to a 10-0 lead before the bottom of the second inning. Junior Erin Askins and freshman Alex Ledger combined to drive in six of those runs as each homered in the top of the second.

RIT cut the deficit in half over the next two frames, plating three runs in bottom half of the second and two in the third to make it a 10-5 game. Hannah Trumble cleared the bases with a double to highlight the second-inning rally.

Following a scoreless fourth, the Engineers added two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to complete the scoring in the contest. Askins' second home run of the day made it a seven-run game, before a pair of sacrifice flies in the sixth brought the game to a close.

Sophomore Brooke Sroczinski earned the first of her two wins in the circle, pitching 3.2 innings of one-hit relief. She allowed only a single and walk. Melissa Gould (2-12) took the loss for the Tigers, surrendering 10 runs (9 earned) on 10 hits over 2.0 innings.

In Game 2, all nine starters found the hit column for the Engineers, including three each from graduate student Veronica DeStefano and sophomore Catherine Worthington.

After a Ledger RBI-single in the top of the first, the Tigers took their first lead of the weekend, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run homer by Raquel Estrada.

The Engineers answered in the top of the third, when senior Kyla Anderson lifted a sac fly to right, scoring Worthington from third. RPI then took the lead for good in the top of the third, scoring three times on three hits and one RIT error. Graduate student Maddie Provencher plated classmate Allie Hunt with a groundout to short, before Worthington ripped a two-run homer to left.

Both teams scored four times in the sixth, with Askins providing a two-run double in the top half. Brooke Seifert brought home two for the hosts with a single to right in the bottom of the inning.

RPI tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh, thanks to Hunt's second home run of the year – a two-run shot to left.

Sroczinski (5-2) went all 7.0 innings in the nightcap, allowing six runs (4 earned) on 11 hits, with four strikeouts and two walks. Jennifer Vickery (0-2) took the defeat in the circle, allowing four runs (1 earned) in relief.

The Engineers are back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to Ithaca College for a Liberty League Semifinal game. First pitch is TBA.
