Women's Soccer Drops Opener in Overtime, 2-1

Engineers score first, but fall to UMass Boston

TROY, N.Y. – Senior Mary Jo Murphy scored a pair of goals, including the overtime-winner to lift the University of Massachusetts Boston women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Wednesday afternoon at East Campus Stadium. The Engineers, who were playing their first home contest in 669 days, fall to 0-1 on the season, while the Beacons open at 1-0.

Murphy (Worcester, MA / Burncoat) netted the deciding goal in the 100th minute, latching onto a cross from the right wing by classmate Jackie Turner (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth North) and tucking inside the near post.

RPI senior Whitney Wisnom (Hillsborough, CA / Design Tech.) turned in the first chance of the game in the fifth minute, when her curling shot hit the right post.

Sophomore Gwen Barnes (Hooksett, NH / Londonderry) then gave the hosts the lead in the 24th minute, corralling a loose ball at the top of the 18 and slotting home her first collegiate goal.

UMass Boston picked up the pressure as the first half wore along and wound up outshooting the Engineers, 12-6, after 45 minutes of action.

The start of the second half saw the hosts turn in a number of chances on the counter attack, including a driving run up the left flank from Wisnom, who saw her shot skip wide right of the net in the 51st minute.

Just three minutes later, senior centerback Megan Huang (Mountain View, CA / Los Altos) collected a failed clearing attempt and launched a shot from 30 yards out that was tipped over the bar by Beacons' junior goalkeeper Maria Spylios (Leominster, MA / Leominster).

UMass Boston equalized in the 64th minute, when Murphy followed up a blocked shot at the top of the box and rolled home her first of the day, into the right side netting.

The visitors nearly took the lead in the 73rd minute, but RPI freshman goalkeeper Sierra Skelding (Cary, NC / Panther Creek) was able to make a point-blank save on junior Ailaina Keely (Biddeford, ME / Biddeford).

Freshman Bryanna Swinson (Troy, NY / Averill Park) saw her attempt whistle just wide of the right post in the 77th minute, before graduate student Michelle Lomoz (Oceanside, NY / Oceanside) nodded a header wide to the left a minute later.

UMass Boston finished with a 24-11 shot advantage, including 13-5 on goal. Skelding (0-1) had 11 saves in her collegiate debut, while Spylios (1-0) had three.

The Engineers are back in action this weekend, when they host Plattsburgh State and SUNY New Paltz on Saturday (6pm) and Sunday (5pm), respectively. The Beacons host Coast Guard on Friday (3:30pm).
