TROY, N.Y. – Senior
Whitney Wisnom scored the equalizing goal to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 1-1 tie with Plattsburgh State University, on Saturday night at East Campus Stadium. With the draw, the Engineers move to 0-1-1 on the season, while the Cardinals are now 0-0-2.
Following a scoreless opening half in which Plattsburgh outshot the hosts 10-3, a breakthrough came in the opening moments of the second.
A cross from the right side looked to be in the hands of RPI freshman goalkeeper
Sierra Skelding (Cary, NH / Panther Creek), but Cardinals senior striker Emily Frodyma (Watervliet, NY / Catholic Central) dislodged the ball and tapped it into the net for the go-ahead goal. Frodyma's first tally of the season came in the 46th minute.
Rensselaer answered quickly, as Wisnom (Hillsborough, CA / Design Tech.) latched onto a loose ball inside the Plattsburgh penalty area and calmly rolled home her first of the campaign, just inside the left post. Sophomore
Bryanna Swinson (Troy, NY / Averill Park) sent a ball into the penalty area and caromed off a defender before falling to Wisnom on the right side. She took a touch to her right, before slotting past Plattsburgh junior keeper Julia Ennis (Carmel, NY / Kennedy Catholic).
In the 54th minute, freshman
Brooke Miller (Spring, TX / Klein Cain) got into a shot from nearly 30 yards out that was tipped over the bar by Ennis. Eight minutes later, sophomore
Helen Worden (Burlington, VT / Burlington) had a pair of shots, including one that forced Ennis into a diving stop.
Skelding and Ennis then traded big saves in the 82nd and 87th minutes, respectively, sending both teams to overtime or the second time this season.
Wisnom had a pair of chances midway through the first extra frame, but couldn't sneak either shot past Ennis.
RPI flipped the script outshooting the Plattsburgh 14-3 in the second half and overtime, including 6-1 in the extra 20 minutes.
Skelding (0-1-1) finished with six saves in her second collegiate start, while Ennis (0-0-2) had seven.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow evening, when they host SUNY New Paltz (5pm). Plattsburgh visits Sage Colleges tomorrow (5pm).
