SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team enjoyed tournament success as Engineers earned victories in three separate flights in the Siena Invitational at Central Park. Rensselaer, which was playing for the first time this season, faced only Division I competition in the two-day tournament.
In the A Flight, RPI boasted both finalists as freshmen
Aiden Drover-Mattinen and
Emilio Van Cotthem squared off with
Emilio Van Cotthem coming back to win 8-7 (4). He defeated an opponent from Niagara 8-6 in the semifinals, while Drover-Mattinen beat a foe from St. Francis Brooklyn, 8-1.
Fellow freshman
Jonathan McMillan captured the win in the C Flight, winning 8-5 over a player from Siena in the semifinals and then posting an 8-4 win over Matheus Paiva from St. Francis in the final. Paiva knocked out RPI's
Bryce Burnham 8-3 in the other C Flight semifinals.
Winning in the B Flight semifinals was
Yudai Teruyama, who beat teammate
Abraham Yohannes 8-7 (3). Teruyama lost in the final, however, dropping an 8-4 decision to an opponent from St. Francis.
Earlier in the day, Drover-Mattinen and
Max Safanov earned victory in the A Flight doubles by defeating foes from St. Francis 6-1 in the championship match. They began the doubles tournament on Friday with a 6-2 win over a tandem from Lafayette and moving on via a walk-over on Friday. Saturday's semifinals saw them knock off a team from St. Francis, 6-1.
The B Flight doubles final also had an RPI team with Yohannes and
Peter Lohrbach advancing, though they lost 6-2 from a team from St. Francis. They had wins of 6-3 and 6-3 in the quarters and semis, respectively.
Also finalists were
Eddie Wu and
Cameron Yang in the C Flight doubles. They won 6-2 over a tandem from Siena and then defeated a duo from Lafayette 6-1 in the semifinals. They lost their last match 6-1 from a second Siena squad.
