TROY, N.Y. – Senior
Whitney Wisnom scored the game-tying goal to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 1-1 draw with No. 21 St. Lawrence University, on Saturday afternoon at East Campus Stadium. With the share the points, the Engineers are now 2-1-3 overall (0-0-1) Liberty League, while the Saints move to 3-0-2 (0-0-1 Liberty League).
Trailing by a goal late in the game, Wisnom (Hillsborough, CA / Design Tech.) worked the ball to classmate
Erin Barnes (Hooksett, NH / Londonderry) on the left wing, before heading home the equalizing goal, just under the crossbar, after getting on the end of a cross from Barnes. The tally was Wisnom's team-leading third goal of the year.
Almost immediately after the tying goal was scored, the game was halted due to a nearby lightning strike. After an hour and five minutes, the game was called and made official, due to more than 70 minutes having been completed.
SLU netted the game's first goal in just the fourth minute of play, when Isabel Silvia (Wellesley, MA / The Rivers School looped a long ball over the RPI back line that Tyler Potter got on the end of and bounced a shot off the inside of the right post and in for her third goal of the season.
The remainder of the first half yielded few chances either way, with the exception of a shot by RPI freshman
Lea Michel (xxx) in the 44th minute. Taking on a Saints defender at the left side of the box, she cut towards the middle of the field and ripped a shot that bent just wide of the right upright.
Silvia tried to give the visitors a 2-0 lead in the 53rd minute, but she was denied by RPI rookie goalkeeper
Sierra Skelding, who finished with two stops on the day. Keely Snode (xxx) had six stops at the other end of the field.
The Engineers return to action next Saturday, when they host Bard College at East Campus Stadium (4pm). St. Lawrence travels to Union on Saturday (3pm).
