TROY, N.Y. – Three players netted first career goals to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 6-0 victory over Bard College, on Saturday afternoon at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve 3-1-3 (1-0-1 Liberty League), while the Raptors drop to 1-5-0 (0-2-0 Liberty League).
Senior
Whitney Wisnom (Hillsborough, CA / Design Tech.) got the scoring started early for the hosts, when she latched onto a pass from freshman
Lea Michel (Arlington, MA / Arlington) and rifled a left-footed shot into the right side of the net in the second minute of play.
RPI doubled its lead in the 24th minute, with Wisnom corralling a through ball from sophomore
Mikayla Walsh (Warwick, NY / Warwick Valley) and slotting home her second goal of the day and team-leading fifth of the year.
Just over four minutes later, senior
Erin Barnes (Hooksett, NH / Londonderry) made a run behind the Raptors back line and Walsh found her for a breakaway finish and a 3-0 Engineers advantage. The tally was Barnes' third of the campaign.
Senior
Sonya Heldman (South Burlington, VT / South Burlington) then scored her first collegiate goal, burying an early cross from the left side by classmate
Peyton Carney (Port Tobacco, MD / Maurice J. McDonough) for a 4-0 RPI in the 31st minute.
Carney then potted her first goal in the Cherry & White, when she collected a loose ball at the top of the six and right-footed a shot past Bard freshman goalkeeper Seymone Rosenberg (Cheshire, CT / Cheshire).
The Engineers capped the scoring in the 52nd minute off a corner kick from the left side by junior
Haley Jette (Kings Park, NY / Kings Park). Senior
Gigi Mecca (Wallingford, CT / Choate Rosemary Hall) had her shot stopped by Bard goalkeeper Sam Finn (New Canaan, CT / New Canaan), before RPI junior
Sarah Zdanowski (Fort Salonga, NY / Kings Park) stuck home her own rebound for her first collegiate goal.
RPI finished with a 24-5 advantage in shots, including 14-1 on goal. The Engineers also won eight corner kicks to the Raptors' two.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Maya Kessler (Scotch Plain, NJ / Union Co. Magnet for Science & Math) picked her first clean sheet, making two saves.
The Engineers are back in action on Tuesday, when they visit Utica College for a non-league match (4pm). Bard hosts Vassar College on Wednesday (4pm).
