TROY, N.Y. – Senior
Billy Chissoe scored late in the second half to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Eastern Connecticut State, in non-league play at East Campus Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, their fourth straight, the Engineers improve to 4-1-1, while the Warriors drop to 4-3-0.
Chissoe (Gig Harbor, WA / Charles Wright Academy) corralled a loose ball near the penalty spot and fired a shot into the roof of the net to score the game's only goal in the 80th minute. The play began when classmate
Michael Harten (Merrick, NY / Sanford H. Calhoun) delivered the 13th of RPI's 14 corner kicks into the box from the left side. The ball defected to the feet of Chissoe, who potted his second goal in as many games.
The Warriors' best chance to equalize came in the 84th minute, when a corner kick fell to junior Larson Richards (Mansfield, CT / E.O. Smith) on the right side of the penalty area, but his shot was stopped and smothered by RPI senior goalkeeper
Luke Brezak (Camano Island, WA / The Overlake School).
Rensselaer senior centerback
Trevor Bisson (Baton Rouge, LA / Episcopal) had a number of chances to give the hosts the lead throughout the game, including a header that was stopped by ECSU keeper Dylan Pallanck (Willington, CT / E.O. Smith) in the 11th minute.
Bisson saw his header bounce and then glance off the post in the 70th minute after Harten drove in a corner from the left side.
Brezak (4-1-1) finished with three saves for his third clean sheet of the year, while Pallanck (4-3) had four stops at the other end of the field.
RPI opens Liberty League on Saturday, when it visits Bard College (3pm), while the Warriors host the University of Southern Maine on Saturday (1pm).
