ANNONDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Freshman Julio Rodriguez and fifth-year
Tommaso Valagussa netted second half goals to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Bard College, on Saturday afternoon at Lorenzo Ferrari Soccer & Lacrosse Complex. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5-1-1 (1-0-0 Liberty League), while the Raptors drop to 4-3-0 (0-1-0 Liberty League).
After a scoreless first half in which RPI outshot the homestanding Raptors, 4-1, the Engineers picked up their play and were able to find the back of the net twice in a span of just two minutes.
Rodriguez netted an unassisted tally just one tick into the 75th minute, before Valagussa buried his second of the year a minute and a half later. Junior
Josh Gaudiano earned the assist on RPI's second goal of the day.
The Engineers limited the Raptors to just three shots, including two on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Luke Brezak kept his fourth clean sheet of the year, making two stops, while Gavin Hersey turned away five at the other end of the field.
RPI is back on the road on Wednesday, when it travels to Canton to face St. Lawrence (4pm). Bard visits Vassar College on Wednesday (4pm).
