Field Hockey Suffers 3-0 Loss to New Paltz

TROY, N.Y. - Sophomore Morgan Woolley had two goals and an assist and two goalkeepers combined for a shutout as the SUNY New Paltz field hockey team defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 3-0 in a non-league game at Harkness Field.

The Hawks, who improved to 5-1, took the lead at 12:20 of the first quarter when Woolley raced down the right side of the field on a break and fired a shot while cutting toward the cage. The goal, her fourth of the season, was set up by senior Jessica Ascendcao, who sent a long diagonal pass from the defensive zone over midfield to put Woolley ahead of the pack.

Seven minutes prior to Woolley's first goal, teammate Mackenzie Mortimer kept the Engineers off the board with a pair of saves, including a diving stop. Junior Brianna Duba took an insertion from Mikayla Berman and drilled a shot that was saved. The rebound went to Nina Caprio, whose bid was knocked aside by a diving Mortimer.

Junior Natasia Plunkett doubled the lead 6:08 into the second quarter when she finished a crease feed from Woolley on a play that began with a penalty corner.

Woolley's second goal came at 3:41 of the third quarter when she swept in a rebound of a Shannon Bernhardt shot was saved by Jen Richardson.

Mortimer finished with three saves while playing the first half. Ryan Dowling had one stop in the second half. Richardson made five saves on the other end.
