ONEONTA, N.Y. – Senior goalkeeper
Luke Brezak made seven saves and the seventh-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 0-0 draw at 24th-ranked SUNY Oneonta, on Saturday afternoon at Red Dragons Field. Both teams open the season at 0-0-1.
Shots were split evenly in the first half, with each team notching seven. Oneonta's Alex Sipos hit the post in the 23rd minute, before RPI senior
Billy Chissoe saw his attempt sail over the net a minute later.
Brezak was forced to make a pair of stops in the 32nd minute and classmate
Tommaso Valagussa was stymied by Red Dragons goalie Nate Hanna just before the break.
In the second half, the hosts had a narrow 5-3 shot advantage, including four attempts in the final 20 minutes of regulation. Junior
Josh Gaudiano had his try miss over the bar in the 77th minute.
The Red Dragons mustered the only two shots on goal in overtime, with Brezak making the stops to keep the game scoreless.
Gaudiano finished with a game-high four attempts, while Chissoe added three.
RPI is back in action on Wednesday, when it visits Williams College (4pm). Oneonta hosts UMass Boston on Monday (1pm).
