POTSDAM, N.Y. – Junior
Marah Wagner had a hand in both goals to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 2-1 overtime victory over seventh-ranked Clarkson University, on Friday night at Cheel Arena. With the win, the Engineers improve to 8-14-0 (5-6-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Golden Knights drop to 17-3-3 (8-2-1 ECAC Hockey).
Wagner gave the visitors a 1-0 lead at 3:19 of the opening frame, redirecting a shot from the top of the circle by sophomore
Asiah Taylor-Walters past Clarkson goaltender Amanda Zeglen. Sophomore
Magdalena Erbenova picked up the second assist on Wagner's team-leading ninth goal of the season, which came on the power play.
Clarkson increased its shooting output from 10 to 14 in the second period, eventually tying the game on Stephanie Markowski's fourth goal of the season. Helpers went to Brooke McQuigge and Gabrielle David.
The Golden Knights then outshot the Engineers 14-6 in the third, but RPI junior netminder
Amanda Rampado was up to the task, keeping the game even after 60 minutes.
Just 48 seconds into overtime, Wagner led a rush up the right wing boards, before sending a pass across to Larsen in the left circle. Her shot was lifted into the top right corner of the Clarkson net, earning RPI two points on the night.
Rampado finished with 39 saves on the night, while Zeglen had 13 at to the other end of the ice. Clarkson went 0 for 4 on the power play, while the Engineers were successful on their only chance.
RPI's victory was just its sixth in 36 meetings with Clarkson all-time. Snapping an 11-game skid against the Golden Knights, Rensselaer earned its first win since 2015 and first in Potsdam since 2010.
The Engineers are back on the ice tomorrow night, when they visit St. Lawrence University (3pm). Clarkson hosts Union College tomorrow (3pm).
