Mariam Tharwat and
Megan Beaulieu both had a pair of individual victories and swam on two winning relays and freshman
Shannon Brown had two individuals wins of her own as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's swimming & diving team won its sixth straight dual meet, 208-78 over Skidmore College. The Engineers are now 6-1, while the Thoroughbreds drop to 2-4.
Tharwat, a graduate student, and Beaulieu, a senior, were joined on the meet-opening 200 medley relay team by
Colleen Whittaker and
Gwyneth Yuen and the foursome posted a time of 1:54.53 to defeat four other units.
Following an eight second win in the 1000 freestyle by Gabriel Crother-Collado, Beaulieu followed with a win in the 200 freestyle and later a victory in the 200 backstroke. Her win in the backstroke came in a time of 2:12.66, which was nearly seven seconds in front of the runner-up, teammate
Ola Nawrocki (2:19.02).
Yuen and Whittaker garnered individual victories in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke, respectively, with Whittaker edging Brown by less than a second (1:09.67-1:10.47), before Tharwat captured the 50 free. Her win came in 26.07 with teammate
Alyssa Cahill reaching the wall just .23 behind. Tharwat later won the 200 breaststroke, registering a time of 2:43.87.
Brown's first win came in the 100 free, edging Yuen 55.30-57.76, and her second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:13.72. Whittaker, who swam a 2:16.61, was second.
The 200 free relay team of Beaulieu, Cahill, who had won the 100 butterfly four swimming events prior, Crother-Collado and Tharwat enjoyed a six-second win with a time of 1:43.91. A second RPI relay team was the runner-up in 1:47.34.
The Engineers are back in competition on Saturday when they host Hamilton College at Robison Pool beginning at 1pm.
