PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Madie Stockfish recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Brown University women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium. With the win, the Bears improve to 2-12-2 overall (2-7-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 6-14-0 (3-8-0 ECAC Hockey).
Stockfish (North Bay, ON / Widdifield Secondary School) took advantage of an RPI giveaway in front of its own net and scored, exactly one minute into the game. Stockfish fired a low shot, blocker side, to beat Engineers junior netminder
Amanda Rampado (Stoney Creek, ON / Stoney Creek Sabres) for her fourth goal of the season.
RPI tied the game on its fourth power play of the game, early in the second. Senior captain
Mikayla Capelle (Dawson Creek, BC / Okanagan Hockey Academy) found junior
Marah Wagner (Langley, BC / Robert Morris) in the low shot and she snapped a shot into the top right corner of the net for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Graduate student
Lauren Severson (Rockford, IL / Madison Capitals) picked up the secondary assist on the play, which came at 3:46.
Senior Shay Maloney (McHenry, IL / McHenry West Campus) gave the hosts the lead for good at 15:57 of the second. Jumping a loose puck just outside the crease, she lifted a shot under the crossbar for her team-leading seventh goal of the year. Helpers on the power play tally went to Stockfish and graduate student Megan Forrest (Enfield, NS / Ridley College).
The Engineers had numerous chances to tie the game, outshooting Brown 34-15 in the game, including 11-3 in the second period and 14-5 in the third.
RPI pulled Rampado for an extra skater with 2:15 left in regulation, but could not produce the tying goal. Sophomore Kaley Doyle (Livonia, MI / Stevenson) finished with 33 saves, while Rampado had 13. The Engineers were 1 for 5 on the power play, on which they took 16 shots. Brown went 1 for 2 with an extra player.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow afternoon for a 3pm puck drop at Meehan Auditorium, with the Engineers serving as the home team. The will be preponed from February 5.
