PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior
Maddy Peterson scored a pair of goals to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Brown University, on Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-14-0 (4-8-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Bears drop to 2-13-2 (2-7-1 ECAC Hockey).
RPI opened the scoring at 7:56 of the first period, when Peterson (Princeton, MN / Princeton High School) drove the net from the right side and flipped home her own rebound for the first of her two tallies on the day. Classmate
Julia Blitz (Potomac, MD / Washington Pride) forced a turnover at the Brown blue to set up the play.
Freshman
Mika Jahnke (Allen, TX / Dallas Stars) doubled the Engineers lead at 2:27 of the second, redirecting a point shot by junior
MJ Alexander (Deerfield, IL / Chicago Young Americans) past Bears senior goalie Hayley Kliczko (Niles, IL / Maine East) for her third goal of the season.
The Bears had a chance to pull to within a goal late in the second, but a shot by sophomore Maddie Stockfish (North Bay, ON / Widdifield Secondary School) rang off the crossbar.
Just 29 seconds into the third, the visitors made it a 3-0 game. Junior
Marah Wagner (Langley, BC / Robert Morris) fired through traffic in the high slot and the puck found its way to the back of the net. The marker was Wagner's second of the weekend and team-leading eighth of the season. Junior

Brown broke up the shutout at 15:07 of the third, when senior Lizzy Gross (Scarborough, ME / Kent School) buried a rebound at the right side of the crease. Classmate Tina Paolillo (East Haven, CT / Kent School) and sophomore Sonja Bjorgnson (Phildelphia, PA / Merion Mercy Academy) were credited with the assists on Gross' third of the season.
Peterson capped the scoring at 19:29 of the final stanza, lofting home an empty-net goal from the just outside the zone on the left wing. Taking an outlet pass from sophomore
Magdalena Erbenova (Mlada Boleslav, Czech Republic / Northwood School), Peterson calmly claimed her fifth goal of the year and the the first multi-goal effort of her collegiate career.
RPI junior netminder
Amanda Rampado (Stoney Creek, ON / Stoney Creek Sabres) made 31 saves, including all 15 shots she faced in the first period. Kliczko had 17 stops at the other end of the ice. Brown was 0 for 4 on the power play, while the Engineers did not have an infraction in their favor.
The Engineers return to the Houston Field House next weekend for a pair of ECAC Hockey contests against No. 4 Quinnipiac and Princeton on Friday (6pm) and Saturday (3pm), respectively. Brown is scheduled to visit No. 10 Harvard and Dartmouth next weekend.
