Troy, N.Y. - Sydney Pederson and Sara Boucher both had a goal and an assist and the Mercyhurst University women's hockey team closed out its first road trip of the season with a 4-1 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).
Neither team scored until the 18:18 mark of the period when RPI struck on a goal from the right point by senior defenseman
Hannah Price. Fellow blueliner
MJ Alexander and
Riena Jahnke set up Price, who tallied her first of the season.
Mercyhurst tried to respond in the second period but could not beat
Amanda Rampado until the 17:55 mark of the middle frame. Boucher played the puck out of scrum to Liliane Perreault, who moved it to Pedersen. She faked a shot and deked to her right, letting off a shot that deflected off an RPI stick and fluttered into the net. The second period saw the two teams close to even in shots as the Lakers led 9-8 in the middle frame.
Just over eight minutes into the third period, the Lakers took their first lead of the game when Boucher scored an even-strength goal with Megan McKay and Pedersen picking up assists. It was Boucher's second goal in as many days against the Engineers. Two minutes later, the Lakers extended their lead as Vanessa Upson got on the board with Makayla Javier and Thea Johansson earning assists on a power play tally.
Mercyhurst added an empty net goal with just over two minutes left in the game when Perreault scored her second goal of season while short handed.
The Lakers outshot the Engineers 35-18 in the game with Ena Nystrøm making 17 saves in the win against her former team. Rampado had 31 saves for RPI, including 18 in the first period.
