TROY, N.Y. -
Marah Wagner and
Maddy Papineau scored 10 minutes apart in the second period and
Amanda Rampado stopped the 13 shots she faced to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in a non-league game at the Houston Field House. It was the first of a two-game set with the second starting at 3pm on Saturday.
Wagner's first goal of the season proved to be the game-winner and it came at the 4:28 mark of the middle frame.
Ellie Kaiser started the play with a pass to
Nina Christof, who took a shot from the top of the left face off circle. The puck deflected off RIT's Megan McCormick and right to Wagner, who was alone at the bottom of the right circle. She scored into a vacated right side of the net as the Tigers goalie, Emma Stephen, was challenging Christof's attempt.
Papineau got her first of the season when she took a shot from the top of the left face off circle that found its way into the upper part of the net on Stephen's stick side. Defenders
Taylor Larsen and
Sophia Jones had the assists on the marker, which came six seconds after an RIT penalty expired.
In goal, Rampado had seven saves in the first period, four in the second, and two in the third for her first win of the year. The Engineers improve to 1-6-0, while the Tigers drop to 2-7-0. Stephen finished with 36 saves, including 16 in the second period.
