Big Third Quarter Helps Field Hockey to Win

TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team scored three times in a seven minute span in the third quarter and once in the fourth to overcome a first quarter deficit in defeating St. Lawrence University 4-1 in a Liberty League contest at Harkness Field. The Engineers improve their record to 7-8 overall and 1-5 in the league, while the Saints drop to 4-10 and 0-6.

Sophomore Rachel Banister led the home team with a pair of goals, while Delana Bonci and Brianna Duba both scored once. Sarah Nace finished with one save in the win.

St. Lawrence got on the board first when sophomore Anna Coyne deflected the ball into the cage from the right post at 13:27 of the first quarter. A corner by the Saints led to a scramble in front of the cage that resulted in a shot attempt by Ava Hartley that was blocked. Caroline Hamilton's attempt was knocked away but it went to Coyne, who put SLU ahead.

The score remained that way until 5:41 into the second half when Delana Bonci knocked the ball out of the air at chest level and into the cage. Nina Caprio started the play with an insertion off a penalty corner, passing the ball well out of the circle to Abby Peterson. A pass across to Duba at the top of the arc led to a shot that Banister re-directed. It went across the goal front to Bonci, who tied the game.

Banister got her first and gave Rensselaer the lead four minutes later when she slid the ball past the goalie, Lucy Adiutori and the defenders, off a scramble. RPI held the ball inside the arc off a penalty corner and Banister eventually gained control for a shot to give RPI its second goal. It was three minutes later when Duba scored her goal on a hard drive directly off an insertion from Caprio.

RPI closed out the scoring with four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter when Banister deflected a Lauren McCarthy shot.

The Engineers finished with an 11-2 edge in penalty corners and both teams had 15 shot attempts. Adiutori stopped one shot for the Saints.
