Women's Hockey Loses League Opener at SLU

CANTON, N.Y. - Julia Gosling had a goal and an assist and Lucy Morgan stopped all 17 shots she faced as the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 3-0 in the ECAC Hockey opener for both teams. The Saints improve to 5-4-0 overall, while the Engineers drop to 2-7-0.

Gosling, a junior center, got the scoring started when she potted an even strength goal at 7:40 of the first period. She took a long feed from Suyone Eom and skated up the left side, eventually gaining the face off circle and eluding a defender before snapping off a shot that put the Saints in front. it was the third goal of the season for Gosling.

Abby Hustler made it 2-0 three minutes later when she scored from center ice between the top of the two face off circles. Assists went to Anna Segedi and Gosling. The Saints had eight first periods shots to RPI's five.

Neither team tallied in the second period with Rensselaer's Amanda Rampado making 13 saves in the frame, but SLU got one in the third to close out the scoring. Gabi Jones skated down the left side, cut toward the net and four the back of the net.

Rampado finished with 23 saves on the opposite end of Morgan, who had five stops in each of the first two periods and seven in the third. She helped hold the Engineers to 0 for 3 on the power play.

Rensselaer remains in the North Country for its next game, which is on Saturday at 3pm at No. 10/11 Clarkson University. St. Lawrence hosts Union College at the same time.
