Bonci Scores Twice in Field Hockey's Victory

TROY, N.Y. - Senior Delana Bonci scored her second goal of the game 1:06 into overtime and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team closed out its 2022 season with a 3-2 victory over Oneonta in a non-league game at Harkness Field. The Engineers improve to 8-9, while the Red Dragons drop to 7-9.

After allowing the tying goal with 1:30 to go in regulation, RPI controlled the play in overtime, which led to Bonci's game-winner. It came after she drove down the right side and curled toward the goal, putting a shot on the cage that was stopped. In one motion, Bonci collected the rebound and knocked the ball past the goalkeeper and a defender for her seventh marker of the season.

Morgan Fleming, a senior for the visitors, tied the game with her second of the afternoon when she scored off a feed from Erin Clark with under two minutes to play. That goal came approximately eight minutes after Bonci's first of the game, which was set up by Nina Caprio.

The Red Dragons took the initial lead at 13:25 of the first quarter when Fleming deflected a feed from Elyssa DeWitt at 13:25 of the first period. The play started with a penalty corner that was inserted to Claire Mahoney at the top of the arc. She passed it to her left to DeWitt, who sent the ball toward goal looking for a deflection. Fleming got her stick on it to give Oneonta the lead.

RPI senior Brianna Duba knotted the score at 1-1 in the third quarter when she settled a pass from Abby Peterson and drove the ball into the back of the cage from near the top of the arc. That scoring play also began with a penalty corner.

Sarah Nace earned the win in goal by stopping two shots, while Jennifer Tumino had the same number of saves on the other end.
