Jakob Lee's Four Points Lead Men's Hockey

TROY, N.Y. - Jakob Lee had a goal and three assists, Jake Gagnon scored once with two helpers, and Ryan Mahshie tallied twice as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team defeated Mercyhurst University 6-3 in its season opener.

RPI needed just 34 seconds to get the scoring started as Mahshie took a pass from Lee and scored. Mason Klee also had an assist. Less that three minutes later, Jake Gagnon made it 2-0, but the Lakers countered with a goal from Rylee St. Onge.

Lee's marker, which came on the power play at the 14:44 mark, made it 3-1 and another man-advantage goal, this one from Jack Agnew, gave the Engineers a 5-1 lead at 8:55 of the second period. Agnew and Gagnon had the assists on Lee's goal with Gagnon and Max Smolinski registering helpers on Agnew's.

A goal from James McIssac at 14:21 of the middle frame put RPI ahead by four goals. Mercyhurst got to within two on tallies from Kyler Head and Philip Waugh in the third period, but Mahshie ended the scoring with an empty netter at 19:19. Lee picked up his third assist on the play.

The Engineers finished 2 of 3 on the power play while only taking one minor penalty, which they killed off.

Jack Watson earned the win in goal by making 32 saves, including 14 in the third period. Tyler Harmon made eight saves in the first 28:55 with Matt Lenz stopping 20 shots in relief.
