TROY, N.Y. – Mariah Keopple scored late in overtime to lift the Princeton University women's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Tuesday evening at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Tigers improve to 9-9-4 overall (7-6-2 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 9-17-0 (5-11-0 ECAC Hockey).
Trailing by a goal in the third period, the visitors pulled even at 2-2 on a shot from the right circle by Shannon Griffin at 8:06. Assists on the equalizing goal went Stef Wallace and Kayla Fillier.
Both teams then had chances in overtime, including a shot off the right pad of Tigers netminder Rachel McQuigge by Engineers senior
Maddy Peterson, but Princeton was able to take advantage of RPI's trio getting caught up ice and Keopple finished off a breakaway at 3:24 of the extra frame to earn the two points.
The Tigers opened the scoring at 4:29 of the first period on a 2-on-1 rush. Annie Kuehl rifled a shot high, blocker side to beat RPI junior netminder
Amanda Rampado for a 1-0 lead. Shanon Frankel and Maggie Connors collected the helpers on the play.
RPI pulled even at 11:49 of the first, thanks to Audrey MucCutcheon's seventh goal of the season. Junior
Julia Blitz somehow found McCutcheon all alone on the right side of the slot while falling to the ice for the assist, as McCutcheon had an easy tap in. Freshman
Michelle Nutescu picked up the secondary assist.
The Engineers took their only lead of the game at 5:57 of the second on a redirection in front of goal by graduate student
Lauren Severson. Picking up her fifth tally of the season, she deftly steered a point shot by junior
Marah Wagner past McQuigge for a 2-1 advantage.
McQuigge finished with 27 saves on the night, while Rampado had 39 at the other end of the ice, including a combined 19 in the third perio and overtime.
RPI is back in action on Friday, when it hosts Yale University (6pm). Princeton visits St. Lawrence and Clarkson this weekend.
