Women's Hockey Upended by No. 7 Harvard, 4-1

Crimson build early lead to take three points in late season league clash

TROY, N.Y. – Junior Kyra Willoughby recorded three assists to lead the seventh-ranked Harvard University women's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday night at the Houston House. With the win, the Crimson improve to 20-7-1 (15-5-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 9-22-0 (5-16-0 ECAC Hockey).

Harvard opened the scoring at 6:07 of the first period, when sophomore Shannon Hollands (Uxbridge, ON / Uxbridge Secondary School) fired a shot into the top right corner of the net on a 2-on-1 rush. Skating into the right circle, she beat RPI junior netminder Amanda Rampado (Stoney Creek, ON / Stoney Creek Sabres) over the glove for her fourth goal of the season.

Seven minutes later, the Crimson made it 2-0 on a power play tally from senior Becca Gilmore (Wayland, MA / Noble & Greenough). Moving the puck around the offensive zone, junior Kristin Della Rovere (Caledon East, ON / The Hill Academy) found Gilmore at the bottom of the right circle, where she lifted a shot just under the crossbar for her team-leading 18th of the year.

Sophomore Courtney Hyland (Wellesley, MA / Noble & Greenough) made it a 3-0 lead for the visitors at 12:53 of the second, with assists going to freshman Taze Thompson (Sherwood Park, AB / New Hampton School) and senior Brooke Jovanovich (Oakville, ON / Appleby College).

Thompson netted Harvard's fourth and final goal of the game with just under two minutes to play in the second. She redirected a point shot from Della Rovere past Rampado for her eighth of the season, with Willoughby (Deephaven, MN / Blake School) picking up the secondary helper on the play.

RPI got on the board at 3:13 of the third on a rebound tally by sophomore Asiah Taylor-Walters (Toronto, ON / KW Rangers). Classmate Maddy Papineau (Sudbury, ON / Oakville Hornets) threw a shot on goal that was stopped by Harvard junior goaltender Lindsay Reed (New Vernon, NJ / The Hotchkiss School), but the puck caromed to top of the crease for Taylor-Walters, who scooped home the goal.

Reed (5-4-0) finished with 18 saves, while Rampado (8-21-0) had 33 stops at the other end of the ice.

The Engineers conclude their season tomorrow afternoon with a Senior Day matchup with Dartmouth College (3pm). Harvard travels to Schenectady to face Union College (3pm).
