TROY, N.Y. - For the second time this season, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete
Avery Eugster has been chosen as the Liberty League Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week, it has been revealed.
In two league road games last week, Eugster (San Antonio, TX / Saint Mary's Hall) averaged 7.5 points and 3.0 rebounds in helping the Engineers to a 2-0 record. He shot 50 percent (5 of 10) from the floor and made 4 of 6 free throws. He also had five assists, a team-high five steals and a block in 25.9 minutes per game.
The sophomore forward scored nine points with four rebounds, two assists and two steals in 23:36 of a 74-53 win at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) on Friday. The next day, Eugster scored six points with two rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot in 28:12 of a 79-54 win at Hobart College.
Previously honored on January 3, he has played all 25 games, including two as a starter. He averages 5.9 points and 4.4 rebounds in 20.2 minutes of action. Eugster has scored at least six points in 17 games and pulled down at least three rebounds in 21 contests. He is currently fourth on the team in field goal percentage (47.7) and blocked shots (7) and fifth in rebounding average, assists (33) and steals (16).
The Engineers, who are 21-4 overall and 15-3 in the conference, are the top seed in the league's post-season tournament and host the semifinals and final this weekend at East Campus Arena. RPI plays either No. 4 St. Lawrence University or No. 5 Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon in an opportunity to advance to Sunday afternoon's championship game.
