Baseball Sweeps Sage in Doubleheader

Engineers earn victories of 21-1 and 14-4 over first-year Gators

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team scored 35 runs in just 12 innings of batting to sweep a doubleheader with Russell Sage College, on Friday afternoon at Robison Field at Karl Steffen Ballpark. With wins of 21-1 and 14-4, the Engineers improve to 6-4 on the year, whiele the Gators drop to 2-10.

Freshman Ayush Krishnappa went a combined 4 for 7 with two home runs, including the first of his collegiate career, while scoring four runs and driving in six.

The Engineers scored in all but one inning, posting three frames of five or more runs in game one, including an eight-run bottom of the fourth. Krishnappa, Martin Marinchev, Jack Moncur and Hudson Livesey all had multi-hit games Game 1 on the day.

Ryan Yerby (1-1) picked up his first win of the year, allowing three hits over 6.0 innings, with nine strikeouts and no walks.

In Game 2, RPI jumped to a 9-0 lead after two innings. Krishnappa capped the six-run second with his second home run of the day, lining the first pitch he saw from Jack Clifford over the fence in left.

RPI tacked on two more run in each of the third and fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run, opposite field homer off the bat of Joey Saia.

Joseph Salerno III came through with the biggest hit of the day for the visitors, clearing the bases with a triple to center in the Gators' four-run fifth inning.

Chris Grome (2-0) earned the win on the hill, giving up four runs on four hits over 5.0 innings. He struck out seven and walked two. Evan Mahns and Thomas Neuman each worked scoreless relief innings for the Engineers, with Neuman striking out a pair.

The Engineers are back in action on Sunday, when they host Castleton University (12pm), while the Gators face Hilbert College on Sunday at Falcon Park in Auburn, N.Y. (11am).
