Engineers spoil Dutchwomen comeback effort; pick up first league win

TROY, N.Y. – Senior Sabrina Torcellini scored a game-high six goals to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team to a 15-13 victory over Union College on Wednesday night at Renwyck Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 4-2 overall (1-1 Liberty League), while the Dutchwomen drop to 1-2 (0-1 Liberty League).

Torcellini helped RPI jump out to an early 5-0 lead, scoring three times in the opening three minutes of the game. Megan Shay and Rylie Maready also tallied for the Engineers during the run.

Dana Truini got the Dutchwomen on the board with 10:25 left in the first, before Drew Charlton made it 5-2 with an assist to Syndey McPartlon.

Maready and freshman Ella Graff answered to regain a five-goal edge (7-2). The teams then traded goals until Torcellini made it 9-4 with 14:14 to play in the first half.

Union then went on a 4-0 run to draw within 9-8. Maready's third of the game gave RPI a two-goal cushion, but Grace Heiting answered to bring Union within 10-9 at halftime.

After nearly 10 minutes ran off the clock in the third, the Dutchwomen scored the first three goals of the period to take their first lead of the game at 12-10. Charlton and Anna Smith were followed by an extra player tally from Greta Maurer.

Torcellini ended RPI scoring drought with 28 seconds left in the third, pulling the Engineers to within a goal at 12-11.

RPI then rattled off four straight goals, including an EMO tally from Torcellini with 1:57 remaining to put the game away. Heiting did net a late goal for the Dutchwomen – her second of the game and eighth of the season.

The Engineers were paced by six goals from Torcellini and three from Maready, while Lauren DeLeo (2 goals, 1 assist) also had three points. Olivia Kimball (3-0) picked up the win between the pipes, making nine saves in the second half.
