Women's Lacrosse Tops Utica, 14-9

Engineers get balanced scoring to earn road non-league win

UTICA, N.Y. - Six different players recorded multiple points, including a team-high four from junior Megan Shay, to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team to a 14-9 victory over Utica College on Saturday afternoon at Gaetano Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5-2 overall, while the Pioneers drop to 4-1.

Leading by just a single goal (9-8) late in the third quarter, the Engineers rattled off five straight goals to put the game away. Freshman Lauren DeLeo got the run started with 29 seconds remaining in the third, before senior Sabrina Torcellini made it an 11-8 game with just five seconds on the clock.

Freshman Ella Graff then scored all of her game-best three goals in succession over a span of 3:25 in the fourth. He third tally gave the visitors a 14-8 edge with 11:03 remaining in the contest.

Utica mustered just one goal down the stretch, as the Engineers clamped down on defense. Goaltender Julianna Lukas was only forced to make three saves in the fourth, to help secure the victory for RPI.

Graff was aided offensively by junior Megan Shay, who collected two goals and two assists for four points. Torcellini had two goals and an assist, while DeLeo finished with two goals. Utica was led by two goals each from Lexi Scaccia and Samantha DeConde.

Olivia Kimball earned the win in goal for the Engineers, making four saves over the opening 43:46. Lukas had three stops in just over 10 minutes of play. 

The Engineers are back in action on Thursday, when they host Bard at Renwyck Field (7:30pm). Utica hosts SUNY Canton on Wednesday (4pm).
