Softball Earns Road Doubleheader Split

Engineers take Game 1 at Oneonta, 8-3, before falling 10-1

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Senior Erika Holowka picked up a win in the circle to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to a doubleheader split with SUNY Oneonta, on Thursday afternoon at Red Dragons Softball Field. After winning 8-3 and losing 10-1, the Engineers are now 6-8 on the year, while the Red Dragons move to 9-5.

Holowka (4-3) allowed three runs on eight hits over 6.0 innings in Game 1, striking out eight without a walk. Lauren Weber took a no-decision as the Oneonta starter, giving up two runs on six hits in 3.1 innings.

RPI scored in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead. Gabby Comeau drilled an RBI-double, before the Engineers pulled off a double-steal to send Mikayla O'Neill home from third.

The Red Dragons pulled even after plating single runs in the third and fourth. Megan Palmatier tripled home the tying run to make it 2-2 after four.

A four-run top of the sixth broke the game open for the Engineers, who got a two-run double off the bat of senior first baseman Erin Askins. Comeau capped the rally with an RBI-single up the middle.

Palmatier got one run back with a homer in the bottom half, but Cath Worthington put the game away Caroline Koch and Marissa Nagel collected four base hits apiece in the doubleheader.

The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, when they travel to Castleton for a pair (1pm). Oneonta visits Ithaca for two on Sunday (1pm).
