Dom Black & Mark Gilbride Honored by ECAC

TROY, N.Y. - The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced its 2022 Division III Men's Basketball All-ECAC Teams and major award winners and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) was represented with student-athlete Dom Black being named to the First Team and head coach Mark Gilbride earning Coach of the Year.

Black (Arlington, MA / Arlington), a captain, averaged 11.1 points and 5.6 rebounds in a team-high 31.5 minutes per contest in 27 games. The senior guard made 48.6 percent of his field goal attempts (107 of 220), including 28 three pointers (28 of 80), and 72.8 percent of his free throw attempts (59 of 81). He led the team in steals with 55 and was second in assists (84) and blocked shots (10).

A mechanical engineering major, Black had multiple steals in 16 games for the Engineers, who led Division III in scoring defense (57.4 points allowed per game). His high was seven, which he accomplished once (at St. Lawrence). He also had two-or-more assists in 20 contests and at least five rebounds in 18 games. Offensively, he scored in double figures 13 times with three games of at least 20 points, including a season-high of 25 points (Ithaca).

Black was previously honored as an All-Liberty League First Team selection and the conference's Defensive Player of the Year - for the second consecutive season - as well as being named to the D3hoops.com All-Region 3 First Team and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 3 Second Team.

Gilbride, who is in his eight year, led RPI to a 23-6 record, including two wins in the NCAA Tournament. The Engineers, who were 15-3 in the Liberty League to finish in first place, reached the Sweet 16 for just the second time in school history after earning they earned an at-large berth. They were one win shy of tying the school record for victories in a single season and were ranked No. 21 in the final D3hoops.com men's Top 25 Poll.

Gilbride and assistant coaches James Holmes and Anthony Reilly '22 were the Coaching Staff of the Year in the Liberty League.
