SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College baseball team earned a pair of come-from-behind victories over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to sweep a three-game Liberty League weekend series, Sunday at Castle Diamond. With wins of 3-2 and 8-6, the Thoroughbreds improve to 18-2-1 overall (7-1 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 10-13 (2-7 Liberty League).
Ayush Krishnappa drove a single up the middle to give RPI a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning in Game 1.
Skidmore answered with two in the bottom half of the inning, getting one on a single to William Snyder and an RBI-double from Anthony Mollica, which scored Snyder for a 2-1 advantage.
RPI junior Martin Marinchev then lifted a 3-1 pitch over the fence in left for his second homer of the season, tying the game at 2-2.
A pitcher's duel commenced, as neither side was able to break the deadlock, until Skidmore in the bottom of the seventh. Danny Mellilo opened the frame by reaching on an error. A single from Trey Bourque moved Mellilo to second, before Max Mello doubled to the gap in left to bring Mellilo home for the winning run.
Peter Martin (2-0) worked 1.0 inning of relief to pick up the win on the hill, after starter Ameer Hasan allowed two runs on six hits over 6.0 innings. RPI starter
Alex Vallee also had a no-decision, giving up two runs on six hits in 4.0 innings. He struck out two and walked one.
Ben Koomey (2-1) took the loss, surrendering one unearned run on four hits in 2.1 innings of relief.
In the nightcap, Skidmore jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Bourque got the scoring started with a two-run single to right, before coming home to score on a double-steal attempt, in which Jaden Torrado was tagged out trying for second.
A five-run top of the third gave the Engineers a 5-3 lead.
Joey Saia reached on fielder's choice to get RPI on the board.
Hudson Livesey then ripped a base hit to left, pulling the Engineers to within 3-2, before
Freddy Reichelt drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game. Aiden Hicks capped the rally with a two-run single to right, scoring Livesey and Marinchev.
Skidmore tied the game with a two-run bottom of the fourth and took a 6-5 lead thanks to a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh.
After Livesey brought RPI level with an RBI-ground out in the top of the eighth, but Skidmore got a two-run home run from Bourque in the bottom half of the inning to once again create a two run cushion at 8-6.
Christian Giresi (3-1) was able to record the last six outs of the game to earn the win in relief. He did not allow a hit, while striking out three in 2.0 innings.
Thomas Neuman (0-1) suffered the defeat for RPI, giving up three runs (2 earned) on two hits in 2.1 innings. He had three strikeouts and three walks.
The Engineers are back in action on Wednesday, when they visit Eastern Connecticut State (4pm). Skidmore travels to Williams College on Wednesday (4pm).
